In case you didn’t know, food bloggers network… a lot. And we network with each other most of all. In San Diego, we have a dedicated group of bloggers who meet up regularly, share ideas, inspirations and opportunities with each other. This group is a wonderful resource and many of these people have become dear friends and confidants.
Today is full of inspiration because we’ve paired together with Melissa’s Produce for a blogger challenge! Melissa’s sent us 8 different items from their extensive collection of specialty produce and our challenge was to create a dish using 3-4 of these. In the box were baby dutch potatoes, Ojai tangerines, red quinoa, baby Brussels sprouts, sliced leeks, beets, fava beans and dried chanterelles. Not only was it fun, I’ve been super excited to see what all my foodie friends have come up with! Saint Patrick’s Day reminds me of family and tradition. Every year as a child, I would spend this holiday with my dad & siblings donning tons of green, chowing on corned beef, cabbage & potatoes and watching The Quiet Man. We’d laugh and dad would sing “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling”. I always felt like my green eyes were somehow attached to my distant Irish heritage, a physical reminder of my ancestry more permanent than my Irish last name. Being Irish American, as it turns out however, is way more common than being Irish – seven times more common, in fact. And on Saint Patrick’s Day, you can bet that population somehow seems to increase tenfold. Hey, any excuse to party it up, right?
A couple of weeks ago I had an amazing opportunity to tour three different farms, meet the farmers who run them and learn about how they grow their produce and use water efficiently. The California Farm Water Coalition took me and three other wonderful bloggers through the farming areas of Imperial Valley and Coachella to learn about where our produce comes from and share all this knowledge with you, our readers! I had a fabulous time getting to know Kim from LivLife, Priscilla from She’s Cookin’ and Jeanne from The Jolly Tomato. I gained a wealth of information that I will share with you in two posts, the first being this one: “Winters Salad Bowl”.
This week has been a big and exciting week for me. Monday was my birthday (feel free to send me flowers, chocolate and a singing telegram!) Then, on Tuesday, M and I found out the gender of our baby. Now of course you all want to know what it is but too bad so sad because I’m not going to tell you! Don’t worry, I won’t keep it a secret forever. I just need to keep it a secret until Saturday because we are going to reveal it at my birthday party. Today is National Pistachio Day. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like these sweet little morsels. I even have enough patience to crack them open by hand just to get those little darlings to my lips. To celebrate, I’ve pulled together a simple, fresh and healthy pasta salad that sings with the green hue and sweet and salty crunch of pistachios. But first, a little history…
And now for a love story…
When M and I first started dating, I lived in a small one bedroom apartment on a busy corner in a trendy hipster neighborhood in San Diego. I had a cute little patio and people were always walking by heading to the local bar, restaurant, book store, or just out walking their dogs. It was excellent for people watching but not private at all. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed hosting dinners out there on my little patio, especially for my new boyfriend who couldn’t seem to get enough of my cooking!
